Borrow Courage From Your Future Self

Borrow Courage From Your Future Self

August 07, 20263 min read

I used to fall asleep picturing a road I hadn't walked yet.

I was far from the man I loved, in a season that felt impossible to move through. We wanted to be together, but I couldn't just leave the country I was living in — it wasn't simple, it was complicated and slow and mostly out of my hands. So most nights, right before sleep, I played a picture in my mind.

I could see us walking near the ocean. The sun on our faces, talking about nothing important, just two people together at last. And I felt something I couldn't find anywhere else in my life back then — I felt at peace, I felt strong. I felt like a woman who had already done something big for herself.

What we see in our mind today can become our life tomorrow. That's not pretending. That's rehearsal.

I didn't know it then, but I was borrowing courage from a version of me who hadn't arrived yet.

Somewhere inside every dream we're chasing is a version of us who already caught it. That's who we're borrowing from.

This is something we can all do. When we picture our future confident, courageous self — the one who has already made the hard decision, already set the boundary, already built the life they wanted — and we let ourselves feel it fully, we get to borrow that strength before we've earned it the long way.

Close your eyes. See the version of yourself who already made it — strong, confident, unstoppable. You can borrow those qualities for your current self if you ever need them.

We don't have to wait until we feel brave to act brave. We can meet that future self early and let that courage move through us right now, tonight, before anything has actually changed.

We don't have to feel brave to act brave. We can picture someone who is, act as they would, and let the feeling catch up.

A few months later, I was walking on that exact road. The sun was on my face. The man I loved was beside me — my husband now — and we were together, really together, after everything it took to get there. It wasn't a metaphor anymore — it was just an ordinary day, and I was living inside the picture I had carried in my mind for so long.

The future self we imagine isn't fantasy — it's information. It's proof of where we're already heading, if we keep going.

Confidence isn't something we wait for. It's something we practice — in our mind, long before we ever prove it out loud.

So if a dream feels far away right now, here's what you can do. Close your eyes and see yourself already there — already strong, already confident, already living it. Borrow that feeling and bring it into today. That's how you connect to your future. That's how dreams become real.

The mind doesn't always know the difference between what we're living and what we're imagining. So we might as well imagine well.

🏆“Sometimes we work hard toward a dream and still feel like we're getting nowhere. Two things change that: picturing ourselves already living it, and surrounding ourselves with people who already are. When our brain sees it done — even just in our mind, even just in the people around us — it starts to feel safe. And what feels safe and real, we can finally reach.” - Natalie O’Rourke

👉This is exactly the kind of thing we'll be learning and practicing together inside Freedom to Shine, the new club space I'm building for people ready to trust themselves again. It's coming soon, and I can't wait to share it with you.
